Adult Sibling Work

Adult Sibling work
Strengthening Relationships Between Adult Siblings

Few relationships shape us as deeply as the ones we have with our siblings. They are often the longest relationships of our lives, carrying our shared history, old roles, loyalties, and unresolved hurts. Just as we can struggle with our parents well into adulthood, many of us find ourselves caught in painful or stuck patterns with a brother, a sister, or the whole sibling group, whether that’s distance, conflict, or a quiet ache for something different.

Yet despite how much these relationships matter, this kind of work is still incredibly rare. Most people never imagine there’s a place to bring a sibling relationship for care and repair, so they carry it alone or let it drift.

Drawing on my extensive experience in couples and family therapy, I offer sibling therapy for pairs and larger groups as a space where each of you can be heard, where old patterns can be understood rather than simply repeated, and where new ways of relating can emerge. We look at the roles you were each assigned growing up, the different ways you each experienced your family, and how those early narratives still shape your interactions today.

The focus goes beyond surface-level disputes to the deeper emotional currents of your shared bond.

Every family lives inside its own culture, with its own expectations about loyalty, roles, and responsibility. And every family is shaped by forces larger than itself: immigration and displacement, class and economic pressure, racism, gender norms, religion, and the values of the time and place it lives in. These influences travel down through generations, often unspoken, shaping who becomes the responsible one, the caretaker, or the one who leaves. Siblings can carry the same inheritance in very different ways, so what looks like a conflict between two people may be a much older story playing out between them. In this work, we make room for the intergenerational and the societal as well as the personal. Being bilingual (English/Japanese) and multicultural puts me in a unique position to think outside the box and to stay keenly aware of each person’s individual experience within the context of their family, their culture, and the wider society they live in.

Sibling therapy is a structured, supportive space to understand and rebuild bonds with the people who have known you the longest. With two siblings, it is in essence couples therapy for adult siblings. When there are more than two of you, we also pay attention to the larger web: the alliances, the sub-groups, and who tends to carry the family’s tensions.

My work is process-oriented and experiential, so we pay attention not only to what you say to each other, but also to what happens in the moment between you, including the tone, the tension, and the felt sense in your bodies. Often this is where the old dynamics live, and where something new can begin.

Whether you are navigating a recent rupture, longstanding conflict, aging parents and family transitions, or simply a wish to break free from decades-old patterns, this work can help you track the loops that keep you stuck, find healthier ways of staying in contact, and relate to one another more authentically as adults.

The goal is not necessarily to agree on everything or to change who your siblings are, but to build relationships that feel more respectful, genuine, and fulfilling.
